20 Time intro: Diet Exploration

20 time is the opportunity and time for students to ask their own questions, do their own research, and form their own conclusions in learning, without the constraints of a typical lesson plan.

For our project we asked the question: How will certain diets affect our physical and mental states? We decided to go on two different diets, one per two weeks. The first would be vegetarian and the second vegan. We chose this project to switch up our daily diets in ways that we have not tried before, and see whether it would benefit us. We also wanted to learn about how changing our diets can have an impact on the environment around us.

We hope to gain a new appreciation how these simple diets can actually have an impact on our own lives, and the lives of animals they can potentially save. We also are interested in seeing if anything from these diets work for us and can continue to be a part of our lives.

We plan to carry out these diets for a month, two weeks for vegetarian, and two weeks for vegan. We are going to keep track of our meals on an app called YAZIO. We will also note our weight and our blood pressure every week. We hope to cultivate a better understanding and appreciation for even the simplest things, such as the food we eat.

  1. I like your creativity with coming up with this idea, however, make sure to be careful about variables. For example, working out one week and not the other will change how you feel, blood pressure, etc.

  2. I agree with Claire, I like how you thought of this innovative idea. Just a question but, would you record what you eat everyday and what you do on your blog posts?

  3. I think this is a creative idea! I just think to actually see the effect of a diet, you would need more than just two weeks. If you just go by what happens after 2 weeks, it could just be a fluke, or you might see that not much changed. Have you considered trying other diets like the Paleo diet as well?

    1. We are probably going to stick with two weeks for vegetarian, and two weeks for vegan. So far, (after a week) I have been seeing good changes in my blood pressure so I think that even one week would have given me results that were different than when I started. Also, when I'm on the diet, two week starts to seem like a long time to me, so I don't think I would be able to go that much longer.
